She felt the lump
that day in the shower
As she drew back
frozen in horror
No she thought
it coudn't be.
She touched it again
then sank to the floor.
In her heart she could see
the univited guest was this mass
which lay beneath her breast.
Quickly her mind raced
as she tried to explore
sitting alone breathless
on a cold wet floor.
She ached for ease
but was denied that day.
She would not have the peace
there no comfort in being okay.
I cannot have cancer!
What could this thing be?
I am too young she answered,
though in her heart lay the key
She thought of her Grandmother
who was years ago diagnosed
Leaving the family
when they needed her most
Inside she always knew she would
bear this unholy cost.
One tear fell, then two
Is this my destiny?
A mere code of DNA,
a family legacy.
Her shoulders now cold
as she cried on the floor
She picked herself up
and reached for the phone
dialing the doctor,
feeling so alone.
A nurse answered...
beginning my journey,
it wasn't a dream,
she would have to explore,
because she knew in
her heart that this was
truly what no woman could ever
afford to ignore.

Truly what no women should ever ignore. Very beautiful. What happened to the beautiful lady in the picture? Is this you?
She is my Grandmother. She had breast cancer at a time when all they did was surgery and morphine. May she rest in peace. She is my heroine. Thanks Sandy.
